The
name Tianjin dates back to the early years
of Yongle reign of Ming Dynasty. Tianjin
means the place where the emperor used to
pass by. In 1860, Tianjin was opened as
an international trading port. For a long
period in China's history, Tianjin's manufacturing
production and port trading were second
to Shanghai's, making Tianjin second largest
industrial and commercial city of China
and the largest financial trading center
in Northern China.

Abstract
|
As
one of the four municipalities under the
direct administration of the Central Government
in China, Tianjin is seen as an extremely
important area - politically, commercially,
industrially, and culturally. Tianjin
is known for successfully attracting foreign
investors and businesses, as it serves
as a major international port city. "Tianjin
High-tech Industry Development Program"
has become a model for attracting and
using foreign investments successfully.
Seattle,
capital of Washington State, U.S.A., is
not only known for its natural beauty,
but is also famous for attracting many
of America's leading companies to set
up headquarters there. For example, Boeing,
Amazon, and Starbucks placed their headquarters
in Seattle. In China, Seattle became famous
through the movie "Sleepless in Seattle."
In
this episode, Wang Shuzu, Vice Mayor of
Tianjin, and Paul Schell, Mayor of Seattle,
exchange their views on how cities can
maximize their advantages in attracting
investments.

One
cannot help but to smell romance when one
thinks of Seattle. Perhaps we still cannot
escape from the scent of Seattle so vividly
portrayed in "Sleepless in Seattle."
The whole city overlooks the Pacific Ocean,
is filled with moist air, and is surrounded
by mountains. Driving just an hour away
from the city, one can find oneself surrounded
by fertile lakes and forests.
