The
model worker tradition in China has endured
through the decades, but not without notable
change: since the twilight of the 20th century,
the institution has evolved to reflect correspondingly
shifting values.
The
May Day celebration and the title of model
worker were originally instated to glorify
the working class; now, model worker nominees
include not only the farmers and workers
of the old ilk, but a handful of entrepreneurs
and an NBA superstar. However, while the
means have changed, the professed ends—goals—remain
the same: to highlight those motivated,
dedicated individuals who drive the country
forward and nurture political, social, and
patriotic spirit in China.
Model
workers are not solely extant in China.
Each year, when May 1st rolls around, countries
worldwide extol the gains made by the labor
movement. In this episode, Mr. Li Jiyan,
president of Beijing Planning and Laboring
Management Institute and an official from
the International Labor Organization, Connie
Thomas, and some famous model workers including
Guan Mucun and Li Xiuli discuss the relevance
and implications of the model worker and
May Day establishments to societies and
peoples today.
